The argument between quartz and mechanical watches gets framed as a purchase decision, and that framing hides most of the cost. A quartz watch is cheaper to buy and a mechanical watch is more engaging to own, and both statements are true while neither settles anything. What decides the total is the sequence of costs after the sale: how often each type needs attention, what that attention costs in proportion to the watch, and whether the parts needed to repair it can still be found.
The purchase price is one number. Ownership is a set of them spread over years, and the spread is where the two types separate.
Accuracy stopped being the question
Quartz settled the argument about timekeeping long ago. A plain quartz movement holds time to a few seconds a month, roughly an order of magnitude better than a well-regulated mechanical movement holding a few seconds a day. Thermally compensated quartz narrows that further, and a mechanical watch, however carefully it is adjusted, drifts with position, temperature and the condition of its lubrication. None of this makes a mechanical watch a poor timekeeper. It makes accuracy a settled property rather than a competition.
The practical consequence is that a buyer who resets a watch twice a year will not notice the difference, and a buyer who wants to set a watch and leave it for months has already chosen quartz. Accuracy decides the choice only for those who treat a watch as an instrument first.
What servicing costs over a decade
A mechanical movement needs lubrication, and lubrication does not last indefinitely. It migrates, thickens and dries, and metal runs on metal in the places where it has gone. A service interval of five to seven years is the usual guidance. A full service is a strip, clean, lubricate, reassemble and regulate, and it accounts for a meaningful fraction of what a modest watch cost in the first place. Neglecting it does not save money. It moves the cost to a later and larger repair, because worn pivots and scored jewels cost more to replace than to prevent.
Quartz is usually maintained by replacement rather than repair. A cell change every two to three years is the routine, and a watchmaker will normally check or renew the caseback gasket at the same time, since the watch has to be opened anyway. If the movement itself fails, the common practice is to fit a replacement movement. That is a less skilled and cheaper operation than overhauling a mechanical calibre, and it is the main reason quartz ownership is quiet.
Batteries, capacitors and light
Most quartz watches run on a silver oxide cell. Alkaline cells are cheaper and more likely to leak, and a leaking cell damages the movement, so the saving is a false one.
Solar and kinetic watches do not take a replaceable battery. They store charge in a capacitor or a rechargeable cell, and that component has a finite cycle life, measured in charge and discharge cycles rather than in years. When it fails, the watch stops and the part is replaced rather than recharged. A solar watch kept in a drawer will discharge and stay discharged, which is the one storage habit that shortens its life rather than protecting it.
Parts availability for older calibres
The real divide between the two types appears when a watch is old. An older mechanical calibre depends on a specific maker’s parts supply and on a watchmaker willing and able to work on it. Some makers restrict parts to their own service centres, and some parts are simply gone, which pushes an owner towards a donor movement and a watch that is partly reassembled from two watches.
A quartz watch from the same era is often easier to revive, because a current movement of similar dimensions can be substituted for the failed one. The trade is originality: the watch runs again, but the movement inside is not the one it left the factory with. For a collectible that matters, and for a daily watch it does not. The alternative for a mechanical watch is a donor movement, taken from a second watch to keep the first running, which leaves the watch partly reassembled from two.
How resale treats each
Mechanical watches generally hold more of their price, and the reason is not accuracy. It is that the buyer of a used mechanical watch can inspect and repair the mechanism, admire it, and expect it to remain serviceable for decades. Quartz depreciates faster, with a small number of exceptions where the design itself carries the value.
Resale is a market opinion and it moves with fashion, so it should be treated as a bonus rather than a plan. A buyer who chooses a watch for what it will be worth in ten years is speculating, and a buyer who chooses for what it will cost in ten years is calculating. The second is more reliable.
The honest trade between them
The two types differ in ways that no specification sheet captures, and the difference is best stated as the set of costs each carries.
- Quartz is accurate, thin, light and undemanding. Its routine cost is a cell and a gasket every few years, and its movement is replaced rather than repaired when it fails.
- Mechanical is interactive, with a sweep rather than a tick, a winding routine and a relationship with a watchmaker. It asks for a service on a schedule and rewards the attention.
Neither is a moral choice, and the price of a watch does not make one type more honest than the other. What matters is that the buyer knows which of those two sets of costs is being accepted.
A rule for choosing
If the watch will be kept for a decade or less and worn casually, quartz has the lower total cost, and the margin is wide enough that a cheap quartz watch with a good case is worth more over time than it looks. If the watch will be kept for decades and looked after, mechanical rewards the maintenance it needs.
Whichever is chosen, budget for upkeep from the beginning. A watch that is never serviced is not a cheaper watch. It is a deferred bill with interest on it.
